The Celebration of Manhood
Written by JR Dowd

This January will be like no other in Wethersfield High School history. If you happen to notice some of the gentlemen getting fuzzier as the month progresses, do not be alarmed. It is merely a new festival of manliness and testosterone simply known as Manuary.

The idea was created by senior Sam Hollings who was shocked at how widespread the phenomenon has become, “At first I thought it was going to be a little thing a couple friends would do together, but pretty much all the guys in the school have really come together and joined up in one giant group of manliness.” Manuary was the master plan cooked up by a few testosterone heavy seniors. Manuary states that the participant must shave the day before the first day of January and then must not shave or shape up again until the last day of the month. If the participant does not fully complete the month, he will be considered a woman for the rest of his known days. The end of Manuary, (January 31, 2010) concludes with a banquet laden with flannel jackets, work boots, and/or other manly articles of clothing.

However some people seem to have some complaints about Manuary. Senior Joe Schuberth said, “The only downside to Manuary is some people's faces are gonna look out of control.” Senior Connor Sullivan said, “I’m not loooking forward to the skeptics who hate facial hair, and there are many.”  But it is unquestioned that the positives outweigh the negatives. Sullivan said that he is, “looking forward to seeing how bearded people can get.” Senior Chris Bonatsakis said, "I am eager to having an excuse not to shave and become more in touch with my manhood.”

Not only are many students participating, but even some faculty have joined in, including band teacher Dave Dion and English teacher Jeff Roets. Manuary has taken on a life of its own this month and has created major buzz. It has been called, “Mantastic” by senior Eric Gerarde. “It is here that we as men join together and show off our true manlyness. It is here we show off our true natural beauty,” poetically stated by senior Jason Boyle. If you missed the beginning of Manuary, fear not, for ambitious and bold men will carry the facial hair into Februhairy. Manuary is a carnival of manly merriment which will surely not die down in years to come.
