Now that the winter months are here, boys and girls around the country are gearing up for a new season of hockey. That’s right, girls too. Over the last 20 years, girls' hockey in the United States has become more and more popular. Hockey is no longer as male dominating as is was in the past, and there are now girl-only teams for all ages, which includes high schools in the state of Connecticut.

Field Hockey Grows To Success |

Three years ago, the current senior class was just entering Wethersfield High School. Not only was this a time of confusion and stress, it was also field hockey’s darkest hour. In their 2006 season, our varsity field hockey team did not win a single game; in fact, they couldn’t even score a goal. Eventually, field hockey hit rock bottom, but then came the class of 2010. As these then freshmen grew older and were able to make it onto the varsity team, field hockey has gone from one extreme to the other. The team has changed drastically over the three years since never scoring a goal, and has progressively gotten better. In 2007 they had two wins. In 2008 they jumped to five wins. Senior Captain and star player Taylor Cobb says, “Our team is really coming into their own this year, and we have high hopes for the rest of the season.” Not only is the news of their success important because of previous years, it is also important because of the level of competition from other schools. Towns like Farmington have a field hockey program starting at a young age, as low as grade school, while our players don’t start until they reach the high school level. The fact that we have no youth field hockey program and our team can still be successful is nothing short of a triumph. Captain Donna Cathcart stated after the first six games of the season, “We have incredibly high expectations of the team this year. We’ve played 6 games and have scored 17 goals already. We have a lot of depth offensively and defensively, and they’ve been playing very well.” The team is led this year by captains Taylor Cobb, Alyssa Bloomquist, and Lindsay Hock. Joining these three players is a group of seniors known by eachother as “The Perfect Ten.” They are Bloomquist, Cobb, Hock, Alissa Angelo, Alexis Aronne, Liz Thibodeau, Pam Rice, Katie Canfield, Alicia Salvatore and Kristy Litts. This group of ten seniors lead the team and were present to see to change they have gone through since 2006. Some key players this year were Katie Canfield, Alyssa Bloomquist, Taylor Cobb, Lindsay Hock, and Jessica Trinh. The team finished with a record of 5-10-1. |
