Boys Soccer 2009
Tuesday, 06 October 2009 03:35

Normal 0 Last season the Boys Varsity Soccer team won the Class L State Tournament, and then graduated seventeen seniors. This year’s varsity team has four returning players from last year: Matt Nowak, Will Noiset, Ross Volpe, and Dillon Walsh. When dealing with an inexperienced team, the only thing you can do is, “Do the unthinkable and succeed,” said senior captain Matt Nowak. According to Nowak, “There’s no problem making the tournament; advancing in the tournament is the issue.” There are some bright spots on this year’s team, such as the defense. According to Tim DiMauro, “The defense is our strong point this season due to the leadership and experience of Mike Morrissette and Will Noiset. The weakest part of our team this year is our offense. There is a difficulty with scoring mainly due to the lack of experience on the front line. The season started off with a loss to rival Newington at Newington. A few challenging games that remain on the schedule are October 7 against Glastonbury at home, October 13 at East Hartford under the lights, and finally at Glastonbury to round out the regular season. The biggest question this year is, “Can we repeat as state champions? We will just have to wait and see,” proclaimed senior Conor Pescatello.

Girl's Soccer

Another great season has been started by the girls' soccer team. With their record being 3-0-1 after beating Windsor, their chances of making it to the state tournament are very high. With an experienced team of seven seniors, they have great talent and team chemistry to use. Senior player Christina Curnias stated, "The team is very supportive of each other which I believe is one of our strengths. We naturally get along at practice and enjoy each other's company which makes practices and games fun. Our pasta dinners also give us a good opportunity to bond outside of soccer." Their biggest goal right now is to make it to the state tournament and hold a winning record. Based on the new conference this year, the competition has gotten harder. A big game to watch would be against Glastonbury on senior night. "We have a very strong defense but we just have to work on putting the ball into the back of the net," said Senior Captain Amanda Pace. The girl's soccer team enjoys practicing every day and having a pasta dinner before every game. Coach Mike Servedio stated, "Our biggest improvement from last year is our team chesmistry and the fact that the team is well balanced." The girl's soccer team is soaring high in pursuit of challenging goals and expectations.
