The boys cross country team moved into a new class and conference this season, moving from Class MM to Class L and from the CCC West into the CCC North. This new alignment of the CCC gave the boys cross country team quite a challenge this season.  At the beginning of the season, Coach Sanborn said “Initially we wanted to hit .500, but we have a very strong schedule and probably won’t finish there.” The new conference has taken the team by surprise and they are feeling the void that last year’s team leader, Brendan Nelson, has left. Captain Kevin Amarucci says, “We lost a key front runner but overall we’re just looking for everyone to improve.” Although the team has had a slow start, the season is not over yet. Coach Sanborn says “We’re progressing and working harder. This team has put in a lot more effort in than previous years.” Coach Sandborn is predicting that they will be (2-6) at seasons end, but their top five runners, Senior Zack Francis, Senior Captain Chris Priore, Senior Captain Kevin Amarucci, Junior Joe Bruno and Sophomore Jack Lamberti hope to bring the team to their goal of a .500 record.

Girls Cross Country: Always Progressing

Wethersfield girls’ cross country is a not very well-known sport around Wethersfield high School. I am guilty of not knowing a lot about the girls’ cross country team, but after talking with captain Catherine Stavola, I have a new found interest in the sport. The girls started the season with a 2-4 record but despite the record Stavola said, “we have a good team, we really do”. Captain Jackie Kowalski, said, "We were in a very difficult conference this year, but we worked hard since the beginning of the summer, and everyone noticed improvements in their individual times." Co-captain Brittany Pfund also told me key players that kept the cross country team competitive. “Catherine Davis, Molly Willsey, Catherine Stavola, and Jackie Kowalski are players we looked to to have a good season”. Despite the tough stretch at the beginning of the year, the girls performed exceptionally well at the Wickham Park Invitational, where they came in first place in the unseeded race. They ended the season with an eleventh place finish at the CIAC Girls MM Divisional Championship. During the season, Coach Brendan Reilly said, “Our goal is to get better as the season progresses," and the girls showed that they accomplished this.
